When Valentine’s Day rolls around, people often make the mistake of thinking a grandiose, over-the-top gesture is the only way to impress their special someone. The truth is, elaborate or overly-expensive gifts can often feel overwhelming to the person receiving them, and leave them feeling embarrassed or uncomfortable.
Simple Valentine’s Day surprises are much more effective at communicating that you care for someone and aren’t just concerned with impressing them. Follow these tips and show your loved one that you’ve put thoughtful attention into making this day special.
There’s nothing quite like waking up and finding out that someone has been working on something for you while you slept.
Get yourself a special cookie cutter, and you can make adorable heart-shaped eggs, pancakes or toasts. Couple those with some fresh-squeezed orange juice (to which you can even add a little sparkling wine to make mimosas), add a single flower on the serving tray, and you’ve got all you need to deliver the perfect start to a day.
Bonus tip: clean up as you cook! That way your loved one doesn’t go from being pampered like a royal to facing a pile of dishes in a trashed kitchen. Nothing takes the sheen off of a nice gesture like creating more housekeeping.
Forget the spa! Valentine’s Day is the busiest time of the year for spas, and it’s not easy to unwind when you’re packed in a hot tub like sardines, or being rushed through a Swedish massage by an exhausted masseuse.
Why not do something fun and energizing instead? You spend a lot of time indoors in February, so planning an outing can be exciting and special.
Rent skates at a local outdoor rink, take cross-country skis through a park, or go exploring through the woods in snowshoes. Spas are nice, but you never feel more relaxed than when you come in from being out in the cold.
(If you’re lucky enough to live in an area with warm weather in February, plan a simple picnic or go for a hike, and thank your lucky stars that you don’t have to shovel any snow!)
Speaking of terrible Valentine’s Day traditions, the worst of all has to be going out for dinner. Like spas, it’s the busiest day of the year for restaurants, which means you’re getting the worst service and a reduced menu at an inflated price.
A much more relaxing idea is to spend that time at home together. Have a meal delivered from your partner’s favourite restaurant, and make a point of avoiding eating in front of the television. By setting the table, lighting a few candles and playing soft music, you can create a much more intimate ambiance that allows you two to relax and enjoy each other’s company.
And again: no dishes!
How do you put a bow on the perfect day spent with your loved one? By not forgetting dessert!
Take the guesswork out of gift-giving, and have a specialty Valentine’s Day gift basket by Boodles of Baskets delivered right to your home. Your partner will be thrilled to have a whole basket of treats to dive into, and you don’t even have to leave the house to make it happen.
